Hamptons Happenings: Romance on My Mind

In an ordinary year, many restaurants in the Hamptons are usually closed in February, when it's the heart of the low season that spans from October through early May.

2021, of course, isn’t your typical year- with most of the world still off limits to travel, the Hamptons is seeing plenty of local travelers this winter, February included. This break from the norm means that restaurants are open for business, especially on Valentine’s Day, which happens to fall on the Sunday of President’s Day weekend.

If you’re looking for a place to celebrate the occasion, the following four spots- all of which are a 15 minute or less drive from The Roundtree- are our top recommendations:

1770 House Restaurant & Inn: An elegant mainstay in East Hampton, this nearly two decade-old upscale eatery has a $125 three-course Valentine’s Day menu that includes dishes such as Montauk pearl oysters, spicy fluke tartare and prime beef fillet.

East Hampton Grill: Stick-to-your-ribs comfort food is the name of the game at this laidback casual American spot. Diners who loathe the overpriced prix-fixe menus that many restaurants offer for Valentine’s Day will appreciate coming here because East Hampton Grill is serving its regular menu. Dishes include the famous soft biscuits with butter and honey, barbecue ribs, a crispy chicken po’ boy and jumbo lump crab cakes with fries and coleslaw.

Wolffer Kitchen: A three-minute walk from our hotel, Wolffer serves innovative food using seasonal and local ingredients. We love the funky, laid-back setting. There’s no set menu for Valentine’s Day so you can have your pick of tasty dishes such as the crispy calamari with lemon aioli, the Korean BBQ ribs and for vegans, a vegetable medley with asparagus, wild mushrooms and squash.

Coche Comedor: From the same owners as Nick & Toni’s, Coche Comedor is the best Mexican restaurant in the area. Again, there’s no prix-fixe menu for the 14th. Come for the expansive selection of tequilas, the Mexican-inspired cocktails and flavorful dishes such as a roasted chicken adobo, the crispy tuna tacos and the queso fundido- a medley of melted cheese, chorizo and roasted green chili peppers served with warm, hand-pressed tortillas.
