The Hamptons summer season is about to kick into full swing, which means that the restaurant scene is heating up, too. Anyone who travels to the East End of Long Island knows that eating out here can be a show filled with fabulous people watching, glamour and great food.
An overview of our favorite spots is below:
Southampton Village is the heart of the action.
T-Bar Steak and Lounge, an outpost of the Upper East Side see-and-be-seen eatery, is one of the in-the-know places to go. The outdoor set-up is sprawling and gorgeous, and the food, from steaks to salads to tuna tartar, is excellent. Let’s not forget the great bar with creative cocktails, solid wines and top shelf spirits.
Argento, a newcomer last year, is sophisticated Italian and among the best the Hamptons has to offer. Menu highlights include crispy rock shrimp with citrus aioli and field greens, whole roasted branzino that’s beautifully filleted and broiled jumbo scallops with hen of the wood mushrooms.
Another Southampton must and a newcomer to the scene is Union Sushi & Steak. Start your night off with a drink, and move on the Bao Bun with BBQ cut pork loin and crispy onions or the classic wedge salad with crisp bacon, heirloom tomatoes, and Danish blue cheese dressing. The USDA prime steaks and cuts are excellent too, and don’t forget about the sides such as roasted fingerling potatoes and corn pudding.
For an extra buzzy night out, Southampton Social Club is where it’s at. This is the place for solid American food, great drinks and dancing. Enjoy an al fresco experience under the stars that includes live music and DJs for the ultimate summer party.
Over in Water Mill, travel to the Greek Islands via Calissa. The famed Mediterranean boite on Montauk Highway has a sexy white washed vibe, the most gorgeous patio and a menu of seafood and Greek dishes such as salt baked fish, seafood pasta and Mediterranean mezze. Entrees are always prepared in the classic Mediterranean fashion- simply grilled with citrus, herbs and Cretan olive oil. You can indulge in a delicious meal that is still fashionably healthy any given day of the week.
The wine list at Calissa is extensive and boasts the largest selection of rosé in the Hamptons. Enjoy a glass with your meal as you listen to DJs spinning tunes on Friday and Saturday nights.
Moving onto our very own Amagansett, The Wölffer Kitchen is a gem. The first winery-owned restaurant on the East End is rooted in Wölffer Estate’s signature style and bohemian spirit. The locals often gather here over brunch or dinner for a hearty and casual meal that’s farm fresh seasonal cuisine. You can enjoy simple but well executed dishes such as roasted chicken, short rib macaroni and cheese and salmon with black lentils.
Rosie’s, also in Amagansett, is another notable restaurant. Putting a fresh spin on traditional American fare, the menu offers creative dishes using ingredients from local farms. You will feel like a local when you enjoy their well-known Blunch, which runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Highlights include the kale caesar salad, crispy chicken BLT and avocado toast- of course!
Take a scenic drive to the North Fork for an authentic French meal at Demarchelier Bistro. The New York mainstay has an outpost in Greenpoint with marble top tables, an antique bar top and vibrant collection of contemporary art. Do as the French do, and go for the steak tartare or salad nicoise.
Have I overlooked many other worth mentioning spots? I have no doubt. But as I discover new gems (or new to me at least), I’ll continue to share them in upcoming stories.
